Today’s Word

Isaiah 40:29, NIV

29 He gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak.

Commentary

Paul said, “For Christ’s sake, I delight in weakness, in insults, in hardships, in persecutions, in difficulties. For when I am weak, then I am strong” (2 Corinthians 12:10). We only become truly strong when we depend on God’s strength. “For the foolishness of God is wiser than human wisdom, and the weakness of God is stronger than human strength.” (1 Corinthians 1:25).

Power of God

Romans 1:16, NIV

16 For I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God that brings salvation to everyone who believes: first to the Jew, then to the Gentile.

Commentary

We must never feel ashamed of our connection to Christ or the salvation He freely offers to all. It is a high privilege to represent Him, and we must do so with boldness and enthusiasm.

Mark 8:38

38 If anyone is ashamed of me and my words in this adulterous and sinful generation, the Son of Man will be ashamed of them when he comes in his Father’s glory with the holy angels.”

The Holy Scriptures

2 Timothy 3:16, KJV

16 All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:

Commentary

Throughout history, the Lord chose faithful individuals to communicate His message to the world. Through them, He gave us His Word to instruct and guide our lives like an anchor to hold us steady in times of storms. The Bible is the final authority for our faith and what we believe, which God reveals to us through the Holy Spirit.

Romans 15:4

4 For whatsoever things were written aforetime were written for our learning, that we through patience and comfort of the scriptures might have hope.

In the name of Jesus Christ.

Amen

Let the Wickedness Come to an End

Psalm 7:9, KJV

Oh let the wickedness of the wicked come to an end; but establish the just: for the righteous God trieth the hearts and reins.

Salvation Comes Through Faith

Romans 10:9, KJV

That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.

Commentary

Salvation can only come through faith in Jesus Christ. You confess it with your mouth to put your faith into action and to affirm that you are accountable to Jesus Christ. Also believe in your heart that He has triumphed over death.

Resurrection Body

1 John 3:2, KJV

Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be: but we know that, when he shall appear, we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is.

Commentary

One day we will exchange our worn-out, sin-prone, weak bodies for new ones patterned after Jesus’ resurrection body-strong, ageless, free of all sin and completely at home in the holy presence of God (1 Corinthians 13:12).

In the name of Jesus Christ.

From the Beginning

Isaiah 41:4, KJV

Who hath wrought and done it, calling the generations from the beginning? I the Lord, the first, and with the last; I am he.

Commentary

In the book of Revelation, we find that Jesus is called “the first and the last” (Revelation 1:17; 2:8; 22:13). He who has always existed from before the beginning of all things and who will always reign throughout eternity. Our Savior, always knows how to rescue us from all our troubles.

In the name of Jesus Christ.

Amen

God is the Judge

Proverbs 27:2, KJV

Let another man praise thee, and not thine own mouth; a stranger, and not thine own lips.

Commentary

Our Lord loathes human self-promotion. Our society seems to take it for granted, especially in athletics and entertainment, “but God is the judge: he putteth down one, and setteth up another” (Psalm 75:7).

In the name of Jesus Christ.

Amen

Our Everlasting Home

John 14:3, KJV

And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also.

Commentary

As the church is the bride of Christ, we know that Jesus is preparing an everlasting home for us in heaven. One day He will return to claim us and take us to this place He created for us to love and worship Him for the rest of eternity. (Rev 19:7-9; 21:9-27).

In the name of Jesus Christ.

Amen

Search my heart

Psalm 139:23, KJV

23 Search me, O God, and know my heart: try me, and know my thoughts: 24 And see if there be any wicked way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.

Commentary

When we cannot understand ourselves or comprehend our feelings, God invites us to bring our internal struggles to Him and ask for His for insight. He understands our thoughts, sees what we can’t see, hears what we can’t hear and knows what we don’t know.

In the name of Jesus Christ.

Amen

The Law of Love

Luke 6:35-36, KJV

35 But love ye your enemies, and do good, and lend, hoping for nothing again; and your reward shall be great, and ye shall be the children of the Highest: for he is kind unto the unthankful and to the evil.

36 Be ye therefore merciful, as your Father also is merciful.

Commentary

If God were not kind to the unappreciative and ungodly, where would any of us be (Romans 5:8)? The Lord will always judge sin, but He desires that we would turn from our sin and receive His salvation so that He can bless us, not judge us (1 Peter 3:9). Likewise, we must be kind to all people – showing them God’s love and mercy – in the hope they will repent and be saved (2 Timothy 2:24-26).

Vanity of work without God

Psalm 127:1, KJV

127 Except the Lord build the house, they labour in vain that build it: except the Lord keep the city, the watchman waketh but in vain.

Commentary

All our efforts are useless and futile if we do not partner with God in what He wants, and in the time and manner He desires to accomplish it. The blessing of the Lord spells the difference between success and failure, satisfaction and regret.

God Our Father

Psalm 100:3, KJV

3 Know ye that the Lord he is God: it is he that hath made us, and not we ourselves; we are his people, and the sheep of his pasture.

Commentary

God is the Shepherd; we are His flock. He is our Father; we are His children. He is the creator; we were formed by His hand. When we remember these basic truths, we will honor Him and will have more motivation and confidence for whatever situation comes along.

In the name of Jesus Christ.

Amen.

Psalm 119:73, KJV

73 Thy hands have made me and fashioned me: give me understanding, that I may learn thy commandments.

Lamp Unto my Feet

Psalm 119:105, KJV

105 Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.

Comments

Left to ourselves, we often don’t know which path leads to life and which leads to death (Proverbs 14:12; 16:25); we remain in the dark. But through His Word, God sheds light on our situation and leads us to safety.

In the name of Jesus Christ.

Amen

O Praise the Lord

Psalm 117:1-2, KJV

O praise the Lord, all ye nations: praise him, all ye people.

2 For his merciful kindness is great toward us: and the truth of the Lord endureth forever. Praise ye the Lord.

In the name of Jesus Christ.

Amen

God Speaks to His Children

Jeremiah 33:3, KJV

3 Call unto me, and I will answer thee, and show thee great and mighty things, which thou knowest not.

Commentary

Throughout the Bible, God promises to speak to His children but we must listen to His voice. To Listen actively, we must come before the Lord expectantly. We must eagerly anticipate Him speaking to us.

In the name of Jesus Christ.

Amen

The Gospel Shall be Preached

Matthew 24:14, KJV

14 And this gospel of the kingdom shall be preached in all the world for a witness unto all nations; and then shall the end come.

Commentary

The Lord Jesus will not return until the whole world has had the opportunity to hear the Good News of salvation. His divine patience leads to our redemption.

In the name of Jesus Christ.

Amen

All Power Through Christ

Acts 1:8, KJV

8 But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.

Commentary

Every time the power of the Holy Spirit is mentioned in Scripture, it is always related to sharing the gospel of truth so that God will be glorified and that people’s lives will be changed. We become effective witnesses of His love and grace through the power of His Spirit.

In the name of Jesus Christ.

Amen

The Great Commission

Matthew 28:18-19, KJV

18 And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth.

19 Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost:

Commentary

Our job is to be obedient to His command and to be His faithful messengers by telling others about His saving grace through faith in Him. When we do this, the Lord Jesus Christ will draw men and women to Himself.

In the name of Jesus Christ.

Amen

Winning Souls is Wise

Proverbs 11:30, KJV

The fruit of the righteous is a tree of life; and he that winneth souls is wise.

Commentary

The prudent person does not focus on the trivial issues of the world or on how others have wronged them. Rather they understand that each person is eternally in need of the Savior (John 3:36) and works to produce fruit that will last forever (1 Corinthians 3:13-14). The person who is wise operates with God’s priority and perspective in mind. He tells others about God’s salvation (Mark 10:45; Luke 19:10) and glorifies Him with his life (Matthew 5:16; John 15:8).

In the name of Jesus Christ.

Amen

Love Covereth all Sins

Proverbs 10:12, KJV

Hatred stirreth up strifes: but love covereth all sins.

Commentary

We all make mistakes in our relationships, and the natural reaction to an offense is anger. But if we want our relationships to work, we must learn to apply God’s healing love, rather than bitterness to the wounds we suffer (Matthew 5:39-48; Luke 23:34; Acts 7:60; Romans 12:17-21; 1Corinthians 13:4-7; James 5:20).

In the name of Jesus Christ.

Amen

Generation to Generation

Lamentations 5:19, NIV

You, Lord, reign forever; your throne endures from generation to generation.

 Commentary

We live in a time of enormous and rapid change. Yet God remains exactly the same today as He was in the days of Jeremiah - and as He will be forever (Hebrews 13:8). Changes do not surprise Him, nor do they hinder Him in any way. Remember to praise Him today and every day.

In the name of Jesus Christ.

Amen

God’s Grace Saves

Luke 23:43, KJV

And Jesus said unto him, Verily I say unto thee, Today, shalt thou be with me in paradise.

Commentary

One thief had a change of heart while on the cross, and Jesus accepted His genuine expression of faith. Did the thief deserve such mercy? No. None of us do. But the point is that God’s grace saves us, not our merit.

In the name of Jesus Christ.

Amen

Christians Humble in Prayer

2 Chronicles 7:14, KJV

If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.

Commentary

When the construction of the temple and the days of dedication were completed, the Lord taught Solomon a very important principle. Whenever the people were disobedient, He would punish their sin. He also made it clear that when they sought His forgiveness, He would surely restore them. He does the same for us (1 John 1.9).

In the name of Jesus Christ.

Amen

Spirit of Truth

John 16:13, NIV

But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all the truth. He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you what is yet to come.

Commentary

In every area of our inadequacy, the Holy Spirit indwells us to meet our needs in the way that honors God. He draws us to salvation (John 6:44; 1 Corinthians 2:6-16; 12:3), regenerates us (Titus 3:5), convicts us of our sinfulness and teaches us to live in the righteousness of Christ (John 14:26) and seals us for redemption (Ephesians 4:30). Everything that God calls us to do, the Spirit equips and empowers us to accomplish it.

Chasing After the Wind

Ecclesiastes 4:6, KJV

Better one handful with tranquility than two handfuls with toil and chasing after the wind.

Commentary

Paul wrote, “Godliness with contentment is great gain” (1Timothy 6:6). In other words, when we submit to God – resting in Him and trusting Him to take care of the consequences of our obedience – He supplies everything we need. Therefore, we should find all our joy and fulfillment in Him.

Ephesians 5:1-2, KJV

We Shall be Like Him

1 John 3:2, NIV

Dear friends, now we are children of God, and what we will be has not yet been made known. But we know that when Christ appears, we shall be like him, for we shall see him as he is.

Commentary

One day we will exchange our worn-out, sin-prone, weak bodies for new ones patterned after Jesus’ resurrection body – strong, ageless, free of all sin and completely at home in the holy presence of God (1 Corinthians 3:2; 15:42-57).

Redeemed

Isaiah 44:22, KJV

I have blotted out, as a thick cloud, thy transgressions, and, as a cloud, thy sins: return unto me; for I have redeemed thee.

Commentary

God does not want us to sin. Yet when we do, God urges us to return to Him and reminds us that He is faithful to forgive us when we repent (1 John 1:9) and that He has already redeemed us through His display of love on the cross (Romans 5:8).

Peace and Hope

Romans 5:3-4, NIV

3 Not only so, but we also glory in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; 4 perseverance, character; and character, hope.

Commentary

Trials, difficulties and adversities are often God’s way of developing a Christ-like character in us. No one likes trials, but the Lord can use them for our good, if we will trust Him.

Focus on Christ

Galatians 6:14, KJV

14 But God forbid that I should glory, save in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom the world is crucified unto me, and I unto the world.

Commentary

When we take our eyes off the cross, we get into trouble because we place our confidence in things that do not endure eternally. However, when we keep our focus on what Jesus Christ has done for us, He shows us His glory. “And I, if I be lifted up from the earth, will draw all men unto me” (John 12:32).

In God’s Care

1 Peter 5:8, KJV

Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour:

Commentary

We must never forget that we are in a spiritual war with an enemy who is looking for weaknesses. We should never give him a foothold. Regardless of how well things may seem to be going for us, we must always keep our hearts and minds focused on Christ and remain obedient to His commands and faithful to His purposes.

Matthew 25:46, KJV

And these shall go away into everlasting punishment: but the righteous into life eternal.

The Author of Eternal Salvation

Hebrews 5:8-9, KJV

8 Though he were a Son, yet learned he obedience by the things which he suffered;

9 And being made perfect, he became the author of eternal salvation unto all them that obey him;

Does our obedience gain us a Savior? There is nothing we can do to earn our Salvation. Yet all those who truly believe in Him will obey His Word.

Glorify God

1 Corinthians 1:18, KJV

For the preaching of the cross is to them that perish foolishness; but unto us which are saved it is the power of God.

Colossians 4:2, NIV

Joshua 24:10, KJV

The Potters Clay

Isaiah 64:8, KJV

But now, O Lord, thou art our father; we are the clay, and thou our potter; and we all are the work of thy hand.

Commentary

As our Father, God acts for our benefit in ways that our minds cannot always understand. As our potter, He molds us and shapes us in ways that sometimes hurt. But He always deals with us in love.

Higher Ground

Isaiah 55:9, KJV

For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts.

Commentary

God does not require us to understand His will, just obey it, even if it seems unreasonable. Even when we do not comprehend what the Lord is doing in our lives, He wants us to trust Him. His wisdom and perspective are far greater than our own. Even when we cannot discern His methods or timing, we must trust Him because His way is the best way.

The Lord Reigns Forever

Exodus 15:18, KJV

The Lord shall reign for ever and ever.

Let God be Magnified

Psalm 70:4, KJV

Let all those that seek thee rejoice and be glad in thee: and let such as love thy salvation say continually, Let God be magnified.

Commentary

God invites us to express our joy in Him by testifying about it to others. We are not to keep the Good News to ourselves, but are to share it with those who need His gift of salvation.

A House of Prayer for all People

Isaiah 56:7, KJV

Even them will I bring to my holy mountain, and make them joyful in my house of prayer: their burnt offerings and their sacrifices shall be accepted upon mine altar; for mine house shall be called an house of prayer for all people.

Commentary

Jesus quoted this verse when He drove the merchants and money changers out of the temple (Mark 11:15-17). God is serious about prayer and about His people gathering to pray together.

In the name of Jesus Christ.

Amen

God is Greater Than all Things

Isaiah 40:18, KJV

To whom then will ye liken God? or what likeness will ye compare unto him?

Commentary

God is greater than all things, and we should worship Him as such. He is above creation because He formed it all (Isaiah 40:12). He is most certainly greater than the nations (Isaiah v. 15) and our lifeless idols, that cannot speak, hear, smell or see (Isaiah v. 19-20). None of these things can answer our prayers, empower us or help us in all our time of need. God can and He does.

In the name of Jesus Christ.

God’s Love is Our Salvation

Deuteronomy 7:7-8, NIV

7 The Lord did not set his affection on you and choose you because you were more numerous than other peoples, for you were the fewest of all peoples.

8 But it was because the Lord loved you and kept the oath, he swore to your ancestors that he brought you out with a mighty hand and redeemed you from the land of slavery, from the power of Pharaoh king of Egypt.

Commentary

God does not love us because we are so loveable; He loves us because His nature is love and because of His promise to Abraham. We owe our salvation to the love of God, and nothing else (Romans 5:8).

In the name of Jesus Christ.

Amen

Boast in the Lord

Matthew 19:30, KJV

But many that are first shall be last; and the last shall be first.

Commentary

God loves to exalt the humble and humble the proud. So Paul says, “Not many of you were wise by human standards; not many were influential; not many were of noble birth …as it is written: ‘Let the one who boasts boast in the Lord.’” (1 Corinthians 1:26, 31).

In the name of Jesus Christ.

God is Light

1 John 1:5, KJV

This then is the message which we have heard of him, and declare unto you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all.

Commentary

God is light, which means He is absolutely glorious, completely true and morally pure. He is infinite and we are limited; therefore, we can only imagine His perfect holiness. He is the same God who created the universe.

Edify the Church

1 Corinthians 14:12, KJV

Even so ye, forasmuch as ye are zealous of spiritual gifts, seek that ye may excel to the edifying of the church.

Keep your Focus on God

James 3:16, NKJV

For where envy and self-seeking exist, confusion and every evil thing are there.

Commentary

When we envy others, the enemy is successful in shifting our focus away from God and onto our circumstances. We become distracted, prideful and covetous. Our eyes are fixed on our circumstances and the rights we believe we deserve, and we end up making unwise decisions. This prevents us from enjoying God’s blessings.

His Grace is Sufficient

2 Corinthians 12:8-9, NKJV

8 Concerning this thing I pleaded with the Lord three times that it might depart from me.

Don’t Make Judgements Ahead of Time

1 Corinthians 4:5, NLT

So don’t make judgments about anyone ahead of time—before the Lord returns. For he will bring our darkest secrets to light and will reveal our private motives. Then God will give to each one whatever praise is due.

Commentary

None of us are in a position to assess the motivations of the human heart – especially when it comes to another’s service to the Lord. While the Bible does instruct us to react in a certain way to sinful behavior (1 Corinthians 5:2), we are not to judge anyone’s intentions. Often, our opinion of their actions has more to do with our own failings than theirs (Luke 6:36-49).

John 14:6, KJV

Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.

No Shame in Testimony

2 Timothy 1:8, KJV

Be not thou therefore ashamed of the testimony of our Lord, nor of me his prisoner: but be thou partaker of the afflictions of the gospel according to the power of God;

Commentary

Sometimes we may be tempted to keep quiet about our faith in Christ because of our fear of what others will think of us. Yet it is a great privilege to represent Him, and we must do so with boldness and enthusiasm, remembering that it may mean eternal life for those who hear our testimony and respond to the Lord Jesus in faith.

And let him rebuke me;
It shall be as excellent oil;
Let my head not refuse it.

For still my prayer is against the deeds of the wicked.

Commentary

When the righteous reprimand us through a stern rebuke or painful correction, they do so for our own good. In this way, God will work through our brothers and sisters in Christ to make us even more effective ministers of the gospel. “As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another” (Proverbs 27:17).

Gossip Dishonors God

Proverbs 20:19, NIV

A gossip betrays a confidence; so avoid anyone who talks too much.

Commentary

A person who enjoys speaking negatively about others may attempt to draw you in with the secrets they know. However, God’s Word is clear that you should “avoid anyone who talks too much.” Gossip destroys lives and dishonors God.

We Harvest What We Plant

Galatians 6:4, NLT

Pay careful attention to your own work, for then you will get the satisfaction of a job well done, and you won’t need to compare yourself to anyone else.

Commentary

Refuse to fall into the trap of comparing yourself to other people or competing with them to see who is the better Christian. We are all dependent upon God’s grace for every good thing in our lives.

In the name of Jesus Christ.

Amen

Ye Must Watch

Matthew 25:13, KJV

Watch therefore, for ye know neither the day nor the hour wherein the Son of man cometh.

Commentary

Some people have claimed to know the season of Christ’s return, even though the Bible says that no one can determine the day or hour. All such speculation is useless. The point is to continually watch for His coming. We are to remain in a perpetual state of readiness, and an eager anticipation of His return should keep us living productively.

He is the Resurrection

 John 11:25-26, KJV

25 Jesus said unto her, I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live:

26 And whosoever liveth and believeth in me shall never die. Believest thou this?

Using Our Gifts for His Kingdom

Luke 12:48, KJV

But he that knew not, and did commit things worthy of stripes, shall be beaten with few stripes. For unto whomsoever much is given, of him shall be much required: and to whom men have committed much, of him they will ask the more.

Commentary

Jesus does not give us gifts, talents and resources merely to spend them on ourselves. He gives them to us so that we will use them to expand His kingdom and to meet the needs of others, especially fellow believers (1 Corinthians 12:4-7); Galatians 6:9-10).

In the name of Jesus Christ.

God is Worthy of Your Heart

Matthew 6:21, KJV

21 For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.

Commentary

Jesus taught that a person’s heart truly belongs to what it most treasures. Since a disciple is to love God with all his heart, love for material possessions and riches is a subtle form of idolatry. (Colossians 3:5)

What do you think about most throughout the day? What causes your heart to beat fast in wonder and anticipation? What do you think you couldn’t live without? Whatever has your attention is your treasure, but only God is truly worthy of your heart.

Matthew 22:37-38
37 Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind.

38 This is the first and great commandment.

The Gift of Grace

Romans 3:20, KJV

Therefore by the deeds of the law there shall no flesh be justified in his sight: for by the law is the knowledge of sin.

Commentary

God gave His people the law so they could understand their need for grace, not so that they could try to earn their way into His favor. The law shows us our sin so that we will realize how helpless we are on our own and how great a gift Jesus has given us.

God Never Changes

Psalms 77:10, KJV

And I said, This is my infirmity: but I will remember the years of the right hand of the most High.

Commentary

When hardship strikes and we feel at our lowest point, it will always bring us great comfort to dwell on the fact that God never changes and that He will always act on behalf of those who wait for Him (Isaiah 64:4).

Sing God’s Power

Psalms 59:16, KJV

But I will sing of thy power; yea, I will sing aloud of thy mercy in the morning: for thou hast been my defence and refuge in the day of my trouble.

Commentary

Many of us don’t have good singing voices, so why should songs of praise play such a prominent role in spiritual growth? The act of singing tends to unite our emotions and intellect. God wants us to devote ourselves to Him with every part of our lives.

Strength through the Spirit

1 Corinthians 13:10-13, NLT

The Greatest of these is Love

But when the time of perfection comes, these partial things will become useless.

When I was a child, I spoke and thought and reasoned as a child. But when I grew up, I put away childish things.

Now we see things imperfectly, like puzzling reflections in a mirror, but then we will see everything with perfect clarity. All that I know now is partial and incomplete, but then I will know everything completely, just as God now knows me completely.

Three things will last forever—faith, hope, and love—and the greatest of these is love.

Not Unto Us

Psalm 115:1, KJV

Not unto us, O Lord, not unto us, but unto thy name give glory, for thy mercy, and for thy truth's sake.

Commentary

Our task is always to glorify God (Matthew 5:16, John 8:54, 1Corinthians 6:20). He is exalted when we reflect His mercy and truth in our lives. That is why 1 Peter 4:16 tells us, “If you suffer as a Christian, do not be ashamed, but praise God that you bear that name.”

When others see the Lord sustaining us through hardship and answering our prayers with the kind of power that can move mountains, they realize there is something wonderful about Jesus. Our job is to tell them more.

Remembering His Right Hand

Psalm 77:10, KJV

“And I said, This is my infirmity: but I will remember the years of the right hand of the most High.”

The Lord is With You

1 Chronicles 17:8, KJV

And I have been with thee whithersoever thou hast walked, and have cut off all thine enemies from before thee, and have made thee a name like the name of the great men that are in the earth.

Commentary

Everything good that happened to David occurred because God was with him, giving him His love, grace and provision. It is the same with us (James 1:27).

His Throne is Forever

1 Chronicles 17:12, KJV

“He shall build me an house, and I will stablish his throne forever.”

Commentary

This is not only a prophecy about Solomon building the temple – the Lord had an even greater house for David, which would be established by the Messiah. Jesus Christ is the “son of David” (Mt 1:1; 21:9; Lk 1:32), who will rule forever (Jeremiah 33:17).

God Keeps His Covenant

Nehemiah 1:5, NIV

Then I said:

Lord, the God of heaven, the great and awesome God, who keeps his covenant of love with those who love him and keep his commandments.

Commentary

Love for God is what enables us to keep His commandments; that’s why it must always come first. Jesus said, “If you love me, keep my commands” (John 14:15).

Time of God’s Favor

 2 Corinthians 6:2, NIV

 For he says,

“In the time of my favor I heard you,
and in the day of salvation I helped you.”

I tell you, now is the time of God’s favor, now is the day of salvation.

 Commentary

It never makes sense to put off a decision to accept God’s offer of salvation. How many have waited too long? Why would anyone want to delay the joy that comes through a vital relationship with the Lord? When He calls, He wants immediate obedience. Today is the day to respond.

Disobedient Generation

Hebrews 3:12, KJV

Take heed, brethren, lest there be in any of you an evil heart of unbelief, in departing from the living God.

Commentary

The writer reminds us of consequences that can come from unbelief, referring to the generation of Israelites who died in the wilderness rather than trust God to give them the promise land (Numbers 13:25-14:38). Trusting in God strengthens our relationship with Him.

Jesus Comforts His Disciples

John 14:2, KJV

In my Father's house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you.

Commentary

In the Jewish culture, it was customary for a young man to prepare a house for his bride-to-be. At an unspecified time, the bridegroom would return to fulfill the marriage covenant with his wife and take her to their new home. As the church is the bride of Christ, we know that Jesus is preparing an everlasting home for us in heaven. One day He will return to claim us and take us to this place He created for us to love and worship Him for the rest of eternity. (John 14:3; Rev 19:7-9; 21:9-27).

Salutation and Thanksgiving

1 Thessalonians 1:2-3, KJV

We give thanks to God always for you all, making mention of you in our prayers;

3 Remembering without ceasing your work of faith, and labour of love, and patience of hope in our Lord Jesus Christ, in the sight of God and our Father;

Commentary

God’s will and plan for all believers is to live a lifestyle of good works. A balanced and effective Christian life features faith, hope and love working together – motivating everything we do in obedience to Him and for His glory.

Amen

The Day of the Lord

Isaiah 2:17, KJV

And the loftiness of man shall be bowed down, and the haughtiness of men shall be made low: and the Lord alone shall be exalted in that day.

Commentary

A day is coming when human pride and arrogance will be crushed forever and the entire world will acknowledge that God alone rules.

Pray for your Blessing

Nehemiah 5:19, KJV

Think upon me, my God, for good, according to all that I have done for this people.

Commentary

Praying for our own blessing is not selfish, but Biblical, especially when you labor on behalf of others as Nehemiah did.

Nehemiah 13:14

Remember me, O my God, concerning this, and wipe not out my good deeds that I have done for the house of my God, and for the offices thereof.

Isaiah was right

Mark 7:6, NIV

He replied, “Isaiah was right when he prophesied about you hypocrites; as it is written:

“‘These people honor me with their lips,
but their hearts are far from me.'"

Commentary

Beware of Christian leaders who appear to be very religious by their actions, but who are really glorifying themselves rather than the Lord. We should never honor anyone above God. Only He is truly worthy of our praise.

In the name of Jesus Christ.

Amen

What Defiles?

Mark 7:15, KJV

There is nothing from without a man, that entering into him can defile him: but the things which come out of him, those are they that defile the man.

Commentary

What a person eats and drinks cannot defile them, but what comes out of them, ungodly words and actions – certainly can. Jesus wanted His disciples to see that the core issue always comes down to what is in the heart (1 Samuel 16:7; 1 Chronicles 28:9).

Conduct in God’s Household

1 Timothy 3:14-15, KJV

These things write I unto thee, hoping to come unto thee shortly:

But if I tarry long, that thou mayest know how thou oughtest to behave thyself in the house of God, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and ground of the truth.

Commentary

Every believer is to bring honor to God, but it is especially important for church leaders to provide an authentic example of faith in action.

Wisdom and Deception

Deuteronomy 11:16, KJV

Take heed to yourselves, that your heart be not deceived, and ye turn aside, and serve other gods, and worship them;

Commentary

Most people don’t wake up one morning and decide to abandon God. Deception usually plays a large part in making this happen. There is evidence of deception in the Garden of Eden just as it will be at the end of time (Genesis 3:13; Matthew 24:5).

Order thy Steps

Proverbs 4:26, KJV

Ponder the path of thy feet, and let all thy ways be established.

Commentary

God calls us to stay spiritually alert at all times, and that includes taking regular inventory of our lives.

Psalms 139:23-24

Search me, O God, and know my heart: try me, and know my thoughts:

24 And see if there be any wicked way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.

Unity and Maturity in the Body

Ephesians 4:4, KJV

There is one body, and one Spirit, even as ye are called in one hope of your calling;

Commentary

Unity should be a characteristic of the church, but there is only one way to be truly unified. Each believer must be obedient to the Lord. The Word of God tells us that we should be unified and our faith in Christ will take us there.

Faith of the Centurion

Matthew 8:13, KJV

And Jesus said unto the centurion, Go thy way; and as thou hast believed, so be it done unto thee. And his servant was healed in the selfsame hour.

Commentary

Why is faith necessary for us to experience the miracles of God? The Lord delights in doing extraordinary things for those who trust in His goodness and grace. When we exercise faith in God, we are telling Him, “I believe you.” The Centurion passionately demonstrated his faith.

Matthew 8:10

When Jesus heard it, he marvelled, and said to them that followed, Verily I say unto you, I have not found so great faith, no, not in Israel.

In the name of Jesus Christ.

Amen

Patience leads to Understanding

Proverbs 14:29, NIV

Whoever is patient has great understanding, but one who is quick-tempered displays folly.

Commentary

It may feel good for a short while to vent our fury at someone, but “human anger does not produce the righteousness that God desires” James 1:20. Failure to control a quick temper leads only to heartache (Ephesians 4:26-27).

The Hand of God

Ezra 7:6, KJV

This Ezra went up from Babylon; and he was a ready scribe in the law of Moses, which the Lord God of Israel had given: and the king granted him all his request, according to the hand of the Lord his God upon him.

Commentary

When the hand of God is upon us, even kings support our causes.

Christ is Our Salvation

Hebrews 2:3, KJV

How shall we escape, if we neglect so great salvation; which at the first began to be spoken by the Lord, and was confirmed unto us by them that heard him;

Commentary

Our salvation is the gift of eternal life through Christ. Every sin we committed has been forgiven. Yet there may be times when we drift away because we fail to walk in the center of His will. When we focus on anything other than God, we drift away from His purpose for us.

In the name of Jesus Christ.

Ezra Comes to Jerusalem

Ezra 7:10, KJV

For Ezra had prepared his heart to seek the law of the Lord, and to do it, and to teach in Israel statutes and judgments.

Commentary

Ezra knew that the people who had gone back to Jerusalem were in a state of spiritual apathy and rebellion. So he went to Jerusalem to show them how to obey the Lord through the teaching of His Law. Ezra had a definite purpose, so He set priorities that would help him fulfill God’s plan for his life.

Spiritual maturity requires spiritual preparation. It does not happen by chance. If we wish to grow in God, we must seek Him through Bible study and prayer, allowing Him to teach us His ways.

Amen

My Times are in Thy Hand

Psalms 31:15, KJV

My times are in thy hand: deliver me from the hand of mine enemies, and from them that persecute me.

Commentary

People can oppose and harass us, but as children of a sovereign God, we are never victims of our circumstances. We should not allow friends and strangers to dictate outcomes. Be advised that our lives are in the Lord’s hands and not in the hands of someone else.

Remnant of Nathan’s Prophecy

Faith in Christ

John 6:68, KJV

Then Simon Peter answered him, Lord, to whom shall we go? thou hast the words of eternal life.

Commentary

The time will come for all of us when a life of faith in Christ seems more difficult than we expected. The question we must ask ourselves: Where else can we go? Jesus Christ promises us eternal life. Although we face troubles for a little while here on earth, it is because of Christ “Our present sufferings are not worth comparing with the glory that will be revealed in us” (Romans 8:18).

Romans 8:18

I consider that our present sufferings are not worth comparing with the glory that will be revealed in us.

Invitation to Relationship

Isaiah 1:18, KJV

Come now, and let us reason together, saith the Lord: though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they be red like crimson, they shall be as wool.

Commentary

This is an invitation to relationship that only God can offer because only He can remove the sin that separates us from Him. He does this – making us white as snow and completely cleansed of our guilt – through His Son, Jesus Christ (Ephesians 2:13; Revelation 7:9-14).

The Thirsty Soul

Psalm 63:1-4, KJV

O God, thou art my God; early will I seek thee: my soul thirsteth for thee, my flesh longeth for thee in a dry and thirsty land, where no water is;

2 To see thy power and thy glory, so as I have seen thee in the sanctuary.

3 Because thy lovingkindness is better than life, my lips shall praise thee.

4 Thus will I bless thee while I live: I will lift up my hands in thy name.

In the name of Jesus Christ.

Amen

To the Church in Ephesus

Revelation 2:3, NIV

You have persevered and have endured hardships for my name, and have not grown weary.

Commentary

The work Jesus gives us to do can feel taxing and almost unending. To complete our assignment takes both complete reliance upon Him and perseverance. Only when we labor in His strength can we avoid complete weariness (Galatians 6:9).

Galatians 6:9

Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.

In the name of Jesus Christ.

Faith and Forgiveness

Luke 17:4, KJV

And if he trespass against thee seven times in a day, and seven times in a day turn again to thee, saying, I repent; thou shalt forgive him.

Commentary

Jesus is not encouraging irresponsible behavior on the part of the offender, but merciful and gracious behavior on the part of the person who has been wronged. “Forgive as the Lord forgave you” (Colossians 3:13).

Matthew 18:21-22

Then came Peter to him, and said, Lord, how oft shall my brother sin against me, and I forgive him? till seven times?

22 Jesus saith unto him, I say not unto thee, Until seven times: but, Until seventy times seven.

In the name of Jesus Christ.

Amen

John 6:68, KJV

Then Simon Peter answered Him, Lord, to whom shall we go? thou hast the words of eternal life.

Commentary

Times come for all of us when a life of faith in Christ seems more difficult than we expected. Here is the question each of us must answer: Where else can we go? Jesus alone promises us eternal life. And although we face troubles for a little while here on earth, because of Him, "Our present sufferings are not worth comparing with the glory that will be revealed in us" (Romans 8:18).

In the name of Jesus Christ.

Amen

Proverbs 2:6, NIV

For the Lord gives wisdom; from his mouth come knowledge and understanding.

Commentary

Wisdom is the ability to see our lives from the Lord’s perspective and live-in accordance to His will. How do we acquire His wisdom? We ask for it: “If any of you lack wisdom, you should ask God who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you”

James 1:5, NIV

If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you.

Every day with Jesus

Matthew 5:8 KJV

Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God.

Commentary

If you are a Christian, Jesus is with you every moment through the Holy Spirit’s presence in your life. Let His presence, and His Word, be the primary shaping influence in your life this year. You will have a better life as you spend every day with Jesus.
